England need someone to”put up their hand and be the protagonist” to stop Australia retaining the Ashes in Old Trafford, says trainer Trevor Bayliss.
The hosts will restart over the afternoon of the Test, having to bat at 98 overs to draw on 18-2.
The five-match show is level at 1-1 after Ben Stokes’ phenomenal century gave a success in the next Test at Headingley to England.
“I’m always positive – we could get it done,” said Bayliss.
“We’ve already spoken about who’s going to put their hands up and become the hero.
“It is going to take a few of our men to earn fantastic hundreds however, as we found in the previous Test, anything else will be possible”
Following England narrowly avoided the follow-on to be dismissed for 301, a deficit of Jofra Archer, Stuart Broad and 196 decreased Australia at a thrilling afternoon session to 44-4.
But Steve Smith was in creating 82, placing on 105 together with Matthew 16, again as Australia announced to set England a nominal 383 for success.
Until Jason Roy and Joe Denly lived to the near pat Cummins then removed Rory Burns and Joe Root.
“it is a huge challenge but we’ve got two great players out there and we have got some guys in the drop that could make hundreds,” said Bayliss.
“When you lose a few wickets so close to the conclusion of play it’s somewhat disappointing but we’re pretty upbeat.
“Hopefully we can bat well, save the match and revel in a beer afterwards.”
Former England captain Michael Vaughan said to salvage a draw the hosts needed a”wonder” on par with their exhilarating triumph in Leeds.
“To face that Australia attack on this pitch for 98 overs, it is going to take an extraordinary innings,” he told Test Match Special.
“You think it will need to be Ben Stokes back – he is the 1 player that appears calm and composed.
“There have been a part of this England team who have arrived – it’s been individuals and individual brilliance.”
Australia batsman Smith, that currently has 671 runs at a mean of 134.2 in this series, ” said his side will only keep”hitting that top of the stump length” to find the eight wickets that they require in order to keep the Ashes.
Cummins removed Root with a majestic delivery that struck on the very top of off-stump and then left the England captain.
“Cummins struck that length beautifully – that chunk to Root is a design of what we will need to perform,” Smith stated.
“It won’t be easy for England, particularly while the ball is hard.
“I felt pretty vulnerable in my first 20 or 30 balls if they have been bowling that good length and there is enough up and down and backward movement.”
