Lewis Hamilton says he might need to operate”twice as hard” to keep ahead of rising F1 stars Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc.
Verstappen and Leclerc, together with championship leader Hamilton, have demonstrated the stars of this season up to now. Mercedes’ Hamilton and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen have won two of the last five races with Ferrari’s Leclerc winning another in his breakthrough victory at Spa past Sunday.
Hamilton has been 13 years older than 21-year-olds and has been impressed with their own early-career progress.
“They are doing a marvelous job,” Hamilton told Sky Sports in Italy before this weekend’s race in Monza.
“It is fascinating to see their travel since I have been there in that era in the previous part of my career and seeing the trials and tribulations that you proceed through. So I could empathise with what they’re currently going through.
“I have to work twice as hard today to keep ahead of them as they’re young and fresh and energised, and it’s tougher when you get old to stay as fit, as pushed and as eloquent.”
Although Verstappen and Leclerc are contributing the sport’s next generation of motorists, Hamilton remains F1′s standard-bearer and leads the world championship by a large 65-point perimeter with eight races.
The five-time champion insists”I honestly don’t know the number of points I’ve” but says he keeps tabs on his race ending positions and”that’s what I try to keep as large as you can”.
“I have no idea when and if or how the remainder of the championship will go but I must try and make sure I keep hitting the high level,” said the winner of eight of 2019′s hitherto 13 races.
Mercedes would be the defending five-time winners of this Italian GP because the engine age began in 2014 having gone awry in F1′s fastest circuit. Hamilton is the combined Monza listing holder with five victories overall.
However, has the home team been launched by the impressive win for Ferrari at Belgium of Leclerc as the obvious favourites at Monza this weekend?
The Martin Brundle and Simon Lazenby of sky F1 assess that query and the rest of the big talking points going into the weekend at the movie above. Sunday’s race begins at 2.10pm reside just on Sky Sports F1.
